In the current state of our economy, I’m not surprised that one of my most popular Pinterest boards has been the Money Saving Ideas board.
Here, you can find pins for budgeting and saving infographics, links to money saving apps and even how to save money while shopping at Target.
Aside from these informational pins, there are lots of other ways that Pinterest can help with saving some of your hard earned cash.
How I have saved money by using Pinterest
- Trying new recipes- Less money spent eating out (Added bonus..Eating healthier foods=lower long-term health costs)
- Homemade cleaning products- inexpensive ingredients used to make household cleaning supplies (less toxic too)
- Craft ideas and instructions- Use for decorating, entertaining and for gift giving (Remember my Pinterest party and quilling gift?)
- Inspirational and funny quotes- They provide a boost to my mood and keeps my wine intake at lower levels by reducing stress (lower stress = lower healthcare costs)
Meet Karen
I recently spoke to Karen from MoneySavingEnthusiast.com about money saving and Pinterest. During our conversation we realized that there are many ways to use your Pinterest to curate money saving ideas and information. Here are a few we came up with:

- Free fonts and printables
For Karen, saving money is a lifestyle and her whole family is involved. Recently Karen and her kids wanted to do something special for her husband. She went to Pinterest and found a recipe for Crunchy Coated Chocolate Truffles from Food Network’s Money Saving Meals show. She was looking for something easy and inexpensive yet impressive. This fit the bill.
Crunchy Coated Chocolate Truffles
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup light cream
- 1 (12-ounce) bag semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 graham cracker boards
- 1/2 cup shredded coconut, toasted
Karen and her kids made the truffles together. What a great idea to use a spoon to crush the graham crackers! I usually tear the bag and make a mess when I make graham cracker crumbs. But, I pound it with my fist (Can we say anger issues??? Nah, life is good!).
Karen recommends that you keep the truffles small as they are very rich. Also, don’t let the ganache sit too long in the fridge or it will start to separate.
Karen and I also talked about some of the other benefits to making a gift rather than buying it aside from saving money. It is special, anyone can pick something off a store shelf but making something with your hands is an expression of love. Her husband got a delicious treat made especially for him by his family. It also creates memories and can be educational. Karen and her kids spent time together and the kids got to practice some cooking skills while making this gift.
